At Hera Gallery we are seeing R.E.D.: red lines, red tape, red hats,  red flags ….. Red as an energetic and aggressive primary color.  Red as mysterious, fiery, intense and emotional. Red as a symbol of passion, war, hate, and love. 

Hera Gallery is looking for 52 selections of R.E.D. artwork for our 5th annual international open call virtual exhibition. The selected works will speak to the  range of symbols and emotions the color red represents, specifically in conversation with current political and cultural states. 

The exhibition will take place throughout the year of 2027. All selected works will be on virtual display throughout the duration of the exhibition on heragallery.org. Each week, Hera Gallery will choose one featured artist and their work from the exhibition to be posted on all Hera Gallery’s social media accounts. About The Juror: Sonja Czekalski

Sonja Czekalski is a Connecticut based interdisciplinary artist, educator, and curator. Her current work embeds itself in the fifth wave of American feminism meeting at the intersection of women’s craft, visceral memory, and sustainability. In 2021, Czekalski earned her MFA at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Czekalski is an Assistant Professor of Art at Central Connecticut State University and the Art Education Program Coordinator. Recent national and international exhibitions include Sebastol Center for the Arts in Sebastopol CA, the Danforth Art Museum in Framingham MA, Newport Art Museum in Newport RI, RANT Arts in Burnie, Tasmania, and World of Thread in Ontario, Canada. She is an artist board member at Hera Gallery in Wakefield RI. Recent curatorial work includes Tangled Roots: Echoes of Her Story in Environmental Justice at the Chen Art Gallery, Central Connecticut State University, and LABOR a virtual exhibition at Hera Gallery.

About Hera Gallery:
Hera Educational Foundation and Gallery celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024. As one of the first women art cooperatives in the United States, we continue to promote contemporary professional artists through a comprehensive exhibition schedule of member work, curated, and juried intersectional social justice shows. Together with thought-provoking programming our organization encourages dialogue that enriches the cultural life of our non-urban Southern RI community. We provide a venue for young talent to find a public voice, and creative support to local health services. Since its inception in 1974, Hera has been resolutely dedicated to gender equity and feminist discourse to challenge perceptions and inspire social change.

Because of its flexibility and commitment to presenting exhibitions with artistic merit and integrity Hera has been awarded numerous grants for its exhibitions and programs including grants from Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, The Champlin Foundation, Rhode Island Council on the Humanities, Rhode Island Foundation, and the Puffin Foundation.

Must submit 3 images of work. Three images of one artwork, or three different artworks. If accepted, the gallery will ask for additional images and artist statements of all work. 

Submission fee: $15 for 3 images, $5 per each additional image.

All international artists.

All media is accepted. Since this is a virtual exhibition- high-quality images of work must be submitted. Poor images will not be reviewed.
