DeVos Place and Convention center invites artists to submit work for Between Worlds: Where Memory Lives, an exhibition inspired by the traditions and enduring spirit of Dia de Los Muertos. Exhibition Location: Skyway of the DeVos Place and Convention Center, Grand Rapids, Michigan
Juror’s Statement:
Dia de los Muertos reminds us that memory is a living connection between past and present. For this exhibition, I am interested in work that explores remembrance and ancestry, loss and celebration through a personal and authentic voice. I welcome both traditional and contemporary interpretations of how artists give form to what-- and whom-- we carry with us.
-Margaret Vega, Juror
Across cultures and generations, we find ways to remember those who came before us. Dia de Los Muertos transforms remembrance into something both deeply personal and communal—a celebration of life, memory, ancestry and the connections that remain after someone is gone.
Work may reflect on memory, ancestry, family, identity, loss, celebration, or the ways we honor and carry forward those who have shaped our lives.
Artists are invited to explore these ideas through painting, drawing, photography, mixed media and installation. Two ofrendas will be selected to be a part of the exhibition. Both traditional and contemporary interpretations are welcome. Artists do not need to work specifically with Dia de Los Muertos imagery; we welcome work that engages more broadly with the universal experience of remembrance.
3 images of different work; can submit up to two images of different views of installation pieces
