Mural Apprenticeship: City of Henderson

The City of Henderson is calling on local artists for a mural apprenticeship:

• Six-month apprenticeship with stipend led by a professional artist (December 2026-May 2027)
• Gain hands-on experience in mural design, project planning, budgeting and large-scale painting techniques.
• Complete your own public mural by designing and painting a Henderson park roll door at the end of the program.
• Open to emerging Las Vegas Valley artists (18+) with limited public mural experience.

The City of Henderson is calling on local artists from the Las Vegas Valley to submit their qualifications for the Mural Artist Apprenticeship. Selected artists will take part in an apprenticeship with a Lead Artist from December 2026 – May 2027 where they will learn how to design, plan, and execute a public mural that encompasses principles of wayfinding and site-identity.  

At the end of the apprenticeship in May 2027, each artist will design and paint a mural on a Henderson park roll door in the Green Valley, Green Valley Ranch, and McCullough Hills areas. This opportunity is intended for artists with limited public art experience. Artists with at least five public murals will not be considered. 

 Artist Apprentices will learn: 

- Site research and management

- Mural design

- Creating artwork that promotes wayfinding and placemaking

- Budget planning

- Project proposals and presentation

- Communicating with clients and navigating design changes

- Techniques to scale artwork for large surfaces

- Best practices for material selection and procurement

- Blending paint, priming, transferring, painting techniques, & sealing

- Cutting clean edges and lines

- Installation strategy and logistics

- Artist Bio: Tell us about your creative practice and what your interests are as an artist. 250-word limit.

- Artist CV: Provide a list of relevant artistic experience from education, training, individual and group exhibitions, commissions, and other important experience. 2-page limit.

- Letter of Interest: Describe why you are interested in this Artist Apprenticeship and what makes you a good candidate for this opportunity. 250-word limit.

- Describe your public art experience.

- Visual Portfolio: Provide up to 5 examples of your artwork along with title, year, size, location, and any important details.  We will accept JPEG or PNG files.

- At least 18 years of age

- A current resident of the Las Vegas valley. Artists will be required to provide their current zip code.

- Each candidate must demonstrate large-scale painting experience (varied substrates are acceptable like canvas, wood, fabric, drywall, brick, etc.)

- Be physically able to lift and carry material, climb ladders, paint large surfaces, and work outside.

- Obtain liability insurance during the mural painting process.

- Able to commit to this six-month program:

     - November – March:

               - 1-hour monthly time commitment: Monthly learning sessions with Lead Artist, either as a group or individually, depending upon schedules.

               - 2-hour time commitment x 2: Must attend and present to the City of Henderson Public Art team on two occasions for a 2-hour session

               - 4 – 8 hours per month time commitment: Site research, design, and design refinement on the artist’s own time to create a mural proposal. 

               - April 19 – 25; 30 – 40 hour time commitment:  Must be available to start and complete their assigned mural between April 19 – April 25. Schedule may change due to weather conditions.
