Longmont’s Art in Public Places (AIPP) program, on behalf of the City of Longmont, invites community members to submit applications to design a new official City of Longmont flag. The selected designer will create a distinctive flag that uses symbolism, color, and strong flag design principles to reflect community feedback, shared values, and aspirations for the future.
Eligibility: This opportunity is open to people who currently live in Longmont, Colorado, as well as members of Native Nations whose ancestral homelands include the Longmont area. People of all ages, abilities, backgrounds, and experience levels are encouraged to apply. Participants under the age of 18 need a parent, guardian or trusted adult to submit the application on their behalf. Longmont’s Art in Public Places (AIPP) program, on behalf of the City of Longmont, invites current Longmont, Colorado residents and members of a Native nation of whose ancestral land includes Longmont to submit their designs for a new, official City of Longmont flag. Participants are encouraged to create a unique flag design that uses symbolism, color and strong flag design principles to reflect community feedback, values and aspirations.
Three participants will be selected from the pool of applicants as semi-finalists to proceed in the flag redesign process.

Applications are due no later than Monday, July 20, 2026, at 11:59 pm. Late applications will not be accepted.
In response to this Call for Participants, all application materials will be reviewed, and three semi-finalists will be selected. Selection will be based on a review of each narrative and visual examples demonstrating participant’s style.
Semi-finalists will be invited to create an informed flag redesign to be presented to the community and City Council. Each semi-finalist will be paid $1,000 for their redesign proposal.

While AIPP will present the community feedback and preference to City Council for redesign consideration and/or adoption, the City of Longmont maintains the right to retain the current original official city flag design.
Can Youth apply?
Youth are highly encouraged to apply. Applicants under 18 will need a parent, guardian or trusted adult to submit the application on their behalf.
Can a Team Apply?
Applicants may apply as a single participant or multi-person collaborative group. If applying as a team, please submit a single application with one resume for the team, with one page per team member.
Budget
The budget for this commission is $1,000 for up to three semi-finalists and an additional $1,500 for the finalist of a City Council-adopted redesign.

This project is open to participants living in Longmont Colorado and the members of a Native Nation whose ancestral land includes Longmont, regardless of race, color, creed, gender, gender variance, sexual orientation, national origin, age, religion, marital status, political opinion or affiliation, or mental or physical disability.
