Project Description
The Math and Science Building 16 is composed of two connecting wings. The two-story West wing houses department administration, a student support and resource center, faculty offices/support and math/engineering classrooms, while the older East wing houses the science facilities. Between the two wings lies the two-story central hallway which acts as a main circulation corridor through the building.
The renovation of the building was completed with a commitment to creating high quality teaching and learning spaces. The design supports Lane Community College’s role in providing a diverse, equitable and inclusive community through education and employment.
The overall goal of the renovation project was to update the campus laboratory facilities in the East wing to provide flexible, safe and inviting teaching labs. The project will not only increase teaching effectiveness, safety and accessibility, but will also transform a tired, outdated facility into an inviting and inspiring learning environment that puts science and math on display. The concept of "Science and Math on Display" is emphasized by replacing random posters and display cases with a system of clip-in poster rails along one side of the hallways facing the benches, and providing the one main hallway with two large display cases for the many natural and physical specimens owned by the department. The other main hallway in the building as well as the south entrance have been selected as potential locations for site specific artwork that will complete the renovation by serving as a major focal point for building users.
