State of the Art 2026

Studio Montclair seeks entries for State of the Art 2026, an exhibition to celebrate the talent and diversity of Studio Montclair's artist members. 

Studio Montclair Members are invited to submit work for State of the Art 2026, our 29th Annual Members' Show. 

All SMI Members are guaranteed one piece in this exhibition.  

Dates of exhibition are June 26 – July 24, 2026. 

Venue: SMI Leach Gallery, 641 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair, NJ

Specifications:

● Artists must submit a minimum of two works, or a maximum of three works. 

Submitting three (3) works total – two must have a maximum size of 16 inches in any direction, including mat and frame; the third work may be larger, in accordance with the specifications below. 

OR all three works may have a maximum size of 16 inches in any direction.

Submitting two (2) works total – both may have a maximum size of 16 inches in any direction OR one may have a maximum of 16 inches in any direction and the second work may be larger, in accordance with the specifications below.

Do not submit two (2) large works.

No minimum size requirement.

Not to exceed 30 lbs.

Artists may submit a maximum of 3 works.

All media accepted including videos and installations.  

Work previously shown in any SMI exhibition will not be accepted.  

Work must have been completed within the past 5 years.

For JPEG file format images, files should be at least 300 dpi and minimum size of 1600 pixels on the longest side. We will accept lower resolution images, but please note that those images cannot be used for publicity and will display poorly in the exhibit catalog. Digital images should be cropped to show only your artwork. If edges are irregular, it is best to photograph against a black background.  

Submit work that will be available for the duration of the exhibition. No substitutions will be accepted after selections are finalized.  

No giclée reproductions of original art accepted.

● 2D work: Maximum 5 feet in any direction including frame, not to exceed 30 lbs. ALL wall-hung art must be properly wired for hanging – no fishing line, no string, no saw-tooth hangers. Stretched canvas may have finished painted edges or strip framing. No large decorative frames. Gallery format framing only. Visit SMI website for framing requirements.

● 3D wall work: Maximum 4 feet in any direction, MAXIMUM 12 inch depth, not to exceed 30 lbs.  

● Sculpture on pedestals: Maximum 4 feet in any direction, not to exceed 50 lbs. Artists may be asked to supply their own pedestals, if necessary.  

● Video: mov, mp4, and wmv files will be accepted up to 500Mb. Electronic and digital works  must be ready to show – artists must provide all components.  

● Floor installation: Maximum 36L x 36W x 72H inches, not to exceed 100 lbs

NO ceiling hung work. 

Work not conforming to the submission requirements will be rejected.

Studio Montclair has a limited number of monitors and pedestals. Electronic and digital work must be ready to show - artists should be ready to provide all components. Artists must be able to supply their own pedestals if necessary.
