Edges & Boundaries: Artist Call Description
Edges & Boundaries invites artists to examine the lines that shape our lives the visible and invisible, imposed and chosen. In the Pacific Northwest, boundaries are everywhere: coastlines that redraw themselves with every tide, riverbanks that hold and release, mountain ridge-lines that divide weather systems, and clear-cut borders that reveal the politics of land. This exhibition uses “the edge” as both subject and framework by asking what happens at the threshold where one state becomes another.
We welcome work that considers literal borders (geographic, architectural, infrastructural) as well as metaphorical boundaries (social, cultural, psychological, ecological). Submissions might explore sites of transition: fences and property lines, zoning maps and survey marks, shorelines and floodplains, doorways and corridors, skin and surface, language and accent, citizenship and access, intimacy and distance. Artists may also engage boundaries as systems by how they’re drawn, enforced, negotiated, or dissolved and who benefits from their permanence.
We’re interested in works that treat the boundary not as a fixed line, but as an active zone: a place of friction, exchange, ambiguity, and transformation. The “edge” can be a site of protection or exclusion, clarity or distortion, rupture or repair. It can mark a limit or reveal that limits are always constructed.
We encourage submissions across art and conceptual practices, including projects that incorporate mapping, archives, field research, material traces, or community narratives. Works may be quiet and observational or direct and confrontational, but should demonstrate a strong conceptual relationship to the idea of borders, thresholds, and the spaces in between.
