Majestic View Nature Center Mural

The City of Arvada’s Arts & Culture Commission (AACC) is seeking a qualified artist/artist team to design and paint a mural on a four-walled structure located at the Majestic View Nature Center (MVNC). MVNC is the City of Arvada’s environmental education facility and an 80-acre park. The AACC and MVNC hope to select an artist and design that highlights the ecology and natural environment of MVNC and its mission of environmental education. 

The four-wall structure has a square footage of 1,144. Please see the attached photos for more information. The square footage includes all four walls of the structure, including doors.

Details on wall dimensions: 

North facing wall: 35 ft wide x 9 ft tall = 315 sq. ft.

South facing wall: 35 ft wide x 11 ft tall (9 ft tall then 2 ft above garage) = 385 sq. ft.

West and east facing wall: 20 ft wide x 11 ft tall (slanted) = 222 x 2 = 444 sq ft

The selected artist(s) will be awarded a $25,000 contract for all phases of the project, which includes all necessary elements to successfully design and paint the mural. The Arvada Arts and Culture Commission will fund and supply protective graffiti coating to protect the completed mural. 

The mural concept should highlight the location of Majestic View, as well as its connection to inspire environmental learning and an interpretive connection within our community. 

This mural project is open to various 2-dimensional concepts, including representational and non-representational imagery. 

Majestic View Nature Center requests the mural highlight one or more of the following concepts:

• Mural designs that cover all four sides of the structure will be prioritized
• The mural design should blend into the existing habitat and environment of Majestic View
• Location-specific with Colorado plants and animals is preferred
• No humans depicted in the mural is preferred

Budgets are inclusive of all costs associated with the mural, including, but not limited to, materials, artist design fee, installation labor, travel, per diem expenses, project documentation, equipment rental, unexpected expenses, and any other costs related to the creation of the mural.

Applicants must be 18 years or older and hold a current Colorado home or studio address to be eligible to apply. 

The Arvada Arts & Culture Commission will review and select up to four finalists based on their resumes and previous work examples. These finalists will be asked to complete a full proposal for their concept for this mural site. The finalists who are not awarded the commission will be given an honorarium of $250 for their completion of the full proposals for the mural site. The artist(s) selected for the commission will be awarded a contract for $25,000 from the City of Arvada to complete the mural project.

• Call open July 14 through July 31 at 11:59 PM
• Jurying August 1 through August 5
• Finalists notified on August 5
• Final proposals due on August 29 at 11:59 PM
• Mural must be completed by November 2025

Project Considerations 

• Develop and paint a mural artwork
• Design a work that fits well into the context of the site and meets the desires of the neighborhood community
• Use materials that are of the highest quality, designed for durability, and low maintenance
• Complete the project within the set timeline and budget
• The artist agrees to participate in any press or media opportunities as they arise, such as print, interviews, discussions, and presentations as deemed necessary by the Arvada Arts & Culture Commission or City of Arvada
• The artist will not be responsible for the general maintenance of the artwork once completed, but agrees to be available after services have been completed for repair consultation if needed
