Cabinets of Curiosities

Intersect Arts Center invites artists to offer their interpretation of the Wunderkammer, or "Cabinet of Curiosity," utilizing historic casework in our lobby. As the first point of contact for both new visitors and IAC regulars, the lobby currently serves as a welcoming space and a transitional pathway. 

The location of the cabinets offer a unique consideration to engage with the dynamic of the space and their potential to transform the simple passageway into a thought-provoking experience.

Historically, cabinets were collections of enigmatic objects, serving as a window into a collector’s desire to understand the world. We desire to see how your curiosity could make these cabinets come to life. 

We are especially interested in projects that explore the intersections of art with science, nature, identity, and the systems we use to organize and interpret the world.

Proposals for a single cabinet or all three cabinets will be accepted.

The location of the cabinets offer a unique consideration to engage with the current dynamic of the space and their potential to transform the simple passageway into a thought-provoking experience.

Historically, cabinets were collections of enigmatic objects, serving as a window into a collector’s desire to understand the world while simultaneously becoming a reflection of one's identity and even a positioning of social status. We desire to see how your curiosity can fill these cabinets and what could come to life.

We are especially interested in projects that explore the intersections of art with science, nature, identity, and the systems we use to organize and interpret the world—creating a dialogue that deepens our understanding of these connections.

We are accepting proposals for the transformation of a single cabinet, as well as projects that activate all three cabinets in the space. Below, you’ll find detailed dimensions for each cabinet to guide your design and ensure accessibility.

Submission Guidelines:

• Please include installation plans with your proposal.
• We are open to adjusting the shelving within the cabinets, provided the modifications do not permanently alter the architectural integrity of the structure.
• While the cabinets currently lack electrical capacity, we are open to discussing the addition of lighting elements or systems.
