REVIEW PROCESS
Our two-part review format is designed to thoroughly examine an applicant’s body of work and professional presentation before extending an invitation to become an Exhibiting Member of Piedmont Craftsmen. The annual selection of Piedmont Craftsmen’s new Exhibiting Members is made by the Standards Committee. This committee is composed of eleven (11) Exhibiting Members working in differing media*, up to two (2) knowledgeable craft professionals or arts administrators, and one (1) knowledgeable Piedmont Craftsmen Supporting Member. The chair of the Standards Committee is selected from previous committees. The Chair and Piedmont Craftsmen’s Executive Director are nonvoting members.
* Based on: (2) Fiber: on loom and off loom, (2) Wood: furniture and non-furniture, (2) Clay: functional and sculptural, (2) Metal/Jewelry, (1) Glass, (2) Varies each year - paper, leather, mixed media, print, or photography
The Standards Review Committee members are instructed to pay attention to three components of the work being reviewed: technical mastery, design and clarity of voice.
- Technical Mastery: Is the work well crafted? Does it excel in standards of proficiency and professionalism?
- Design: Is the work creative in concept and/or well composed? Is there a marriage between the materials, form, color, line and other artistic elements?
- Clarity of Voice: Does the application suggest a cohesive body of work while maintaining the individuality of each piece submitted? How does this work sit in conversation with other artists in the same medium?
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
The selection process occurs in two parts:
IMAGE REVIEW and
OBJECT REVIEW
PART 1: IMAGE REVIEW
To apply for Exhibiting Membership, applicants must submit:
- Completed Membership Application
- Eight (8) images representing applicant’s best work produced during the last two years. Images may include detail shots or alternative views, however, a minimum of six (6) different works must be represented.
- Artist statement (in the description of materials and techniques field)
- Application fee of $25
Submissions must be submitted by the deadline.
While it is the work of the applicant that is being reviewed, having high quality images can certainly make it easier for the Review Committee to make their decisions. Helpful hints in photographing your work:
- Keep the background plain.
- Avoid group shots.
- One object per frame is recommended.
- Consistency in the body of work presented is crucial.
If you have two distinct bodies of work, whether in the same or different media, you may wish to make two applications. If you choose to do this, contact members@piedmontcraftsmen.org for a $10 discount on your second application fee.
IMAGE REVIEW NOTIFICATION
The results of the Image Review will be emailed/mailed to applicants on June 2, after the Review Committee has made its decisions. Due to the volume of applicants, scores and comments cannot be reported.
PART 2: OBJECT REVIEW
Applicants who score above the median cutoff in the Image Review will be invited to participate in the Object Review as a "Provisional Member" during Piedmont Craftsmen’s Fair.
An invitation to participate in the Object Review is considered a Provisional Membership and does not constitute acceptance for Exhibiting Membership. Each Provisional Member invited to the Object Review may purchase a booth at the annual Fair in November. An Individual Booth Fee is approximately $655 (additional $75 for corner). Booth size is 10’ x 10’ (single artist). Fee includes object jury fee, pipe, drape, and electricity. 10’ x 15’ and 10’ x 20’ booths are also available. If you are accepted to take part in the show in November, we will be happy to work with you on payment plans for booth fees.
OBJECT REVIEW NOTIFICATION
The results of the Object Review will be mailed to applicants within two (2) weeks following Piedmont Craftsmen's Fair. Provisional Members who are not accepted after the Object Review are encouraged to reapply as the Review Committee is composed of different members each year and Provisional Members are considered exempt from the Image Review portion of the following year's membership application process.
Images of work by newly accepted Exhibiting Members will be retained by Piedmont Craftsmen for use in promotion and publicity.
